List of State Universities in Nigeria

In this post, you'll find a list of state universities in Nigeria and their courses, current school fees, cut off marks, websites, location, and their year of establishment.

These are schools that accept second choice and offer courses such as pharmacy, nursing, medicine and surgery, medical laboratory science, mechanical engineering as well as social sciences and art related courses.

As a result, if you'll rather attend a State University either in your current location or outside your region in places like Bayelsa, Enugu, Ekiti, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, and Delta state, then you need to be equipped with this information.

So,

Have you made up your mind to attend a public school owned by a State instead of a Federal or Private University?

Then the first thing you have to do, is to check if it is one of the accredited/approved state universities in Nigeria because a good knowledge of each school's pros and cons will leave you less disappointed in future.

Remember, you do not want to spend the next four to five years of your life in a school that has not been approved by the Federal Government and if that's what you'll like to avoid, then take a look at these universities which have been categorized based on their cheap or expensive tuition fees.

You can also compare each university with another and then decide, which is the best state university in Nigeria for you to spend the next few years of your life while studying.

In line with that, it has been proven that one's environment of study can greatly impact on their performance therefore, you need the best learning environment that your money can afford.

Now, work with us and we'll show you the list of Nigerian state universities and the years they were founded based on the information provided by the National University Commission (NUC).

First of all,

What is a State University in Nigeria

A state university is a public university that is funded by the state Government (at least 90%) and it offers undergraduate and graduate programmes.

This type of tertiary institution is operated and controlled by the state regulations and the same can be said for its syllabus.

While the big idea behind a State University is to offer an affordable education to the general public compared to Private Universities, the school fees of some of these schools may give you cold feet.

This is because most state-owned universities tuition fee is higher than Federal ones which are usually in a bid to increase the State's revenue.

This high school fee is also a means of relying less on the state's fund to pay its workers and as such,  it reduces the level of a strike as is usually the case of with these universities.

While the price may sometimes be their major disadvantage, In Nigeria, it may be easier to gain admission into a state university than a Federal one especially if you're an indigene of the state.

Given below, is a quick breakdown of how the tuition fees are determined in any State University in Nigeria:

1. Indigene and Non-indigene Payment:

In Some state schools like CRUTECH, there is a slight disparity between the school fees paid by indigenes of the state and non-indigenes.

While the fee paid by the indigenes is lesser than than that paid by non-indigenes, the latter is usually higher by a few thousands of Naira, which may not really go down well with non-indigenes of the state.

This change can be attributed to the fact that the tax has already been deducted from the student's parents salary and as such, they get a slight decrement in the amount that is to be paid.

2. Installment Payment:

Whether it is a State, Federal, or Private university in Nigeria, an installment payment may be allowed.

Here, the students may be allowed to pay a higher percentage of school fees such as 60% and  then complete the remaining part at a later date.

This is to ensure that the workload is reduced and as such, every student can be able to pay their fees and on time.

How Were These Schools Selected?

The list of the list of accredited state universities in Nigeria givn above, is based on the information provided on the NUC's (National University Commission) website and as such, this is credible information.

Now you may be wondering, who is the NUC?

The NUC was established in 1962 and it is an authorized body under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) that is mandated by the government to accredit all academic programmes in Nigerian universities.

Consequently, whether a course or program you tend to study in your chosen university is approved or not, depends on this organization.

Other than approving academic programs, the NUC also approves the establishment of universities offering degree programs in Nigeria.

CONCLUSION:

Now that you know the list of approved state universities in Nigeria and their year of establishment, you can go ahead and make a selection from this wide range.

They offer courses like Computer Science, Modern Languages, English and Literary Studies, Visual Arts, Engineering, and several others.

Moreover, if you've already selected a Federal University as your first choice, you can also select one of these to use as your choice universities while applying for JAMB.
